ST. SIDWELL’S Primary School, at Lot 1 Vlissengen Road and Hadfield Street, Lodge, Georgetown, experienced a small fire around 10:20 hrs yesterday.
Sparks emanated from the Guyana Power & Light (GPL) connection to the building, according to District Education Officer, Mr. Immanuel Bridgewater, who is also the music teacher there.
He said teachers smelled something burning and, upon looking outside, they saw the GPL wire afire. They quickly alerted all the others and the pupils and got them out of the building.
The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) was contacted and responded to the scene very quickly, Bridgewater reported.
The school is equipped with extinguishers and some of the staff used them to help put out the flames and there were no casualties.
Fire drills are conducted at St. Sidwell’s regularly and, when the Guyana Chronicle visited the scene, Chief Education Officer Olato Sam was just leaving.
