THE Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha has announced that Sita Jayanti will be observed on Sunday May 19.
Sita Jayanti or the descent of Goddess Sita occurred in the bright half of the Hindu month of Vaishak on Naumi. Sita’s descent on earth was as a result of divine decree.
Sita is Shakti Mata, one and the same with Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati. The fact that she has her genesis in the Cosmos or Godhead was borne out by her many divine actions, one of which is her effortlessly shifting of the Shiva Dhanush (Shiva’s bow).
Sita is acclaimed as the ‘Mother of the Universe’ and is referred to as BHUVANESHWARI, the manifestation of divine power.
No woman has so influenced the lives of millions of women all over the world from age to age as Mata Sita of the Ramayan.
The pens of no poet have managed to sketch a character as noble and as admirable as the pens of Valmikki and Tulsidas. Individually, they described the first lady of Hinduism as possessed of all virtue, all dignity, all courage, all love and beauty.
Mother Sita came on earth many, many centuries ago but the sweet fragrance of her chaste and noble life still gives comfort and consolation to those who are beset by the trials and tests of the world.
The Mahila Mandalee, Women Section of the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha urges all mandirs throughout Guyana to hold special services to observe the occasion.
At a time when crimes against our womenfolk are at an all time high, the Hindu world needs to sensitise all our people about the role of Mother Sita, whose life epitomises dignity, sacrifice, virtue and womanly strength in the face of excessive adversities.
According to the Dharmic Sabha, the position of honour and respect that Hinduism gives to women should be highlighted when addressing Mother Sita’s life so that our men folk especially will be reminded of their roles as father, husbands, brothers and sons and how to behave towards our womenfolk who daily are exposed to brutal violence, and over aggressive and cruel behaviour in the homes.
Services for Sita Jayanti will be held at Rama Krishna Mandir, Barr Street, Kitty at 8 a.m. and at Shri Krishna Mandir, Campbellville at 7 p.m. on Sunday May 19.
