RHTY&SC to host historical Sentinel Security Berbice Sports Award Scheme next month

GUYANA’S leading youth and sports organisation, the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTYSC) continues  to create history in the Ancient County of Berbice, by announcing the first-ever Berbice Sports Award. The Club and Mrs Noreen Gaskin, Managing Director and owner of Sentinel Security have joined hands to host the sports awards which would honour outstanding Berbice male and female sportspersons for the year along with the Berbice Sports Association-of-the-Year.
Club Secretary/CEO, Hilbert Foster, whose brainchild the award is, stated that this is another attempt by the RHTY&SC to identify and honour Berbicians who excel in sports over the year under review. The RHTY&SC/Sentinel Security Sports Awards would also honour the Berbice Sport Association-of-the-Year.
The presentation ceremony would be held on June 23 and sport associations and members of the Berbice public have until June 1 to make nominations.
According to Foster, the main objectives of the awards are to promote the importance of sports in the lives of youths, to promote the ‘SAY NO TO DRUGS’ message, to recognise and honour outstanding sport performances in Berbice and to identify positive role models for youths.
The period under review for the first award would be January 2012 to April 2013 and the different sport disciplines that would be under consideration are cricket, football, volleyball, basketball, cycling, athletics, lawn tennis, bodybuilding, weightlifting, chess, horse racing and boxing.
Each sport organisation in Berbice, along with clubs and schools, are invited to submit nominations for athletes under their watch while they can also submit their work programme for the review period to be considered for the Group award.
The awardees would  be selected by the panel of judges selected by the RHTY&SC, based on achievements during the past year, discipline, role model status and support of others to achieve their own goals in sports.
Only Berbicians can be nominated and must be living in the Ancient County. The Berbice Sportsman and Sportswoman-of-the-Year would each receive a trophy, a plaque and a special gift while the Sports Association would receive a special trophy and a plaque.
Members of the RHTY&SC cannot be nominated even by their schools. Nominations can be dropped off at the Club Office, Area ‘H’ ground, the Berbice Cricket Board Office or DTV-8 office in New Amsterdam.
This Award is the second award unveiled by the RHTY&SC in the past week, following their Ansa McAl Award for Excellence launched last week to outstanding administrators in sports, education and community development, while the Berbice Youth-of-the-Year Award, the third and final of its kind would be announced next week.
