Repairs on East Bank Berbice Road starting soon – Regional Chairman

REMEDIAL work on the East Bank Berbice road, at a cost of $40M, is expected to commence within the next week, Chairman of Region 6 (East Berbice/Corentyne), Mr. David Armogan disclosed Monday.

He told the Guyana Chronicle that it has been made possible with the Public Works Ministry’s contribution of $20M and the $20M from the Regional Budget.
Armogan admitted that the road is in a bad state and nothing has been done to it for quite some time. So it has reached the stage where they think it is now a major imperative.
He said among the things to be undertaken is the removal of the bottom of the bridge and laying the foundation which no longer exists.
According to him, even when the road is patched, if rain falls and it gives way, persons tend to feel that it is a waste of time to do repairs.
Armogan said when it was estimated that the job will cost roughly between US$5M and US$6M which cannot be funded, presently, from the National Budget, the Government applied for special funding from the Inter- American Development Bank (IDB).
He pointed out, however, that the IDB has quite a lot of criteria that has to be met before it would approve the financing and, while the Region had anticipated concluding the agreement this year, unfortunately, it is not likely to be concluded until the first quarter of next year.
According to him, they are, currently, in the process of doing the feasibility study and other necessary drawings along with the assessment of how many persons stand to benefit from the project, how long it is likely to take and the economic benefits to be derived.
