GBBC forced to postpone May’s Friday Night Fights … Lack of venue cited

THE PETER Abdool-steward Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) was yesterday forced to postpone this month’s edition of its monthly ProAm Friday Night Fights (FNF), citing the lack of a venue as the main reason.
Originally the card, which would have seen Barbados-based Guyanese Revlon Lake take on Trinidad and Tobago-based Guyanese Dexter Gonsalves for the national lightweight title, was scheduled to be held in the Sophia Exhibition Centre Auditorium on Friday May 31.

However, Chronicle Sport was reliably informed by a source, who chose to remain anonymous, that the GBBC’s board of directors was not in favour of that venue and with the unavailability of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, a postponement was the only way out.
Both Laured Stewart and Romeo Norville were scheduled to make their professional debuts on the card, facing Eversley Browne and Anson Greene in two four-round encounter, with Deryck Richmond taking on Jermaine King in another four-round bout, before Barbados’ Shawn ‘The Sniper’ Cox faced Kurt ‘The Sledgehammer’ Bess in a 10-round heavyweight fixture.
The Cox/Bess bout would have been the second meeting for both fighters, with the former coming away with a stunning TKO victory the first time they met.
However, while all of the other bouts remain in place when the card is held next month, by which time renovation work on CASH would have been completed, GBBC’s matchmaker Eion Jardine said the Cox versus Bess affair would not materialise.
According to Jardine, who, in his own right is a veteran referee, Cox who was for the first time fighting in Guyana, has signed a contract to do battle for the Commonwealth heavyweight title and according to one of the stipulations in his contract, he cannot face any opponent inside the squared jungle, four weeks before the title fight.
