ON April 26 the reigning Miss Guyana Universe, Ruqayyah Boyer, was invited by Miss Saint Lucia Universe Tara Edwards to the beautiful island in an effort to promote beauty queens in the Caribbean. During her stay she paid courtesy calls on the Honorary Consul for Guyana to St Lucia, Mr. Lokesh Singh, met with government officials, attended interviews and participated in video shoots with Barbadian producer and actor Sean Michael Fields and photo shoots with rising Saint Lucian photographer Royan Des Cartes.
The beauty queen who is an International Relations student at the University of Guyana is also the Public Relations Officer for the Caribbean Youth Environment Network (Guyana).
She liaised with the St. Lucian Chapter of the network during her stay, and attended and volunteered at the National Youth Month 2013 “Youth Explosion” held at the Derek Walcott Square in Castries and hosted by the Ministry of Youth, Development and Sports.
Apart from her studies at university, work in the performing arts and her duties as Miss Guyana Universe, Ruqayyah hopes to launch her foundation Hope Phoenix in August which will be collaborating with CADVA (Caribbean American Domestic Violence Awareness) organisation and hopes that such efforts would see a reduction in the number of gender-based violence cases in Guyana and the wider Caribbean.
