PYO STRONGLY CONDEMNS 2013 BUDGET CUTS : – opposition political parties urged to reinstate funds, put Guyana first : – working class to be significantly affected

The Progressive Youth Organisation  (PYO) wishes to strongly condemn the irresponsible, puerile and anti-nationalistic postures adopted by the combined opposition parliamentarian parties in the National Assembly, which has led to thousands of Guyanese being denied the benefits of several hallmark development projects as a result of sinister and irrational cuts effected to 2013 National Budget. The PYO believes that the actions of the opposition parties must continue to be condemned by all objective, right thinking and patriotic Guyanese as these actions will no doubt have redounding negative effects for Guyana’s continued social, political and economic development.
At the commencement of the Budget debates, the PYO  strongly believed that good sense would have prevailed, and that the opposition politicians would have listened to the sentiments expressed by their supporters, Civil Society, the Guyana Private Sector Commission, Amerindian Stakeholders, the Diplomatic Corps and the Guyanese Public at large.
The PYO had also hoped that under the touted “new dispensation” that the opposition which boasts of its one-seat majority would have demonstrated high levels of patriotism, nationalism, political maturity or at the very least commonsense.
But instead, staying true to form, the opposition chose to use the opportunity of the budget presentation and consideration of the estimates to score cheap political points, settle old scores and hold the ruling administration to ransom.
The PYO condemns this sort of divisive and backward politics which has placed a dark cloud over the nation once again. It is an obvious attempt to stop economic development in Guyana and thereby paint the PPP/C as bad stewards of Guyana.
The PYO also vehemently condemns the actions to create a constitutional conundrum by the opposition Speaker. His lack of understanding of the separation of powers and the authority the Judiciary holds smacks of crass ignorance or a dangerous and mischievous game of politicking. As a learned lawyer he ought to know that the Parliament is beholden to the Judiciary for any interpretation of the law.
The PYO takes this opportunity to sympathize with thousands of Guyanese, particularly, the working class who have been deprived of some of the opportunities contained in Budget 2013 which was widely dubbed a “People’s Budget”.
This unfortunate development also comes at a time when our nation will be observing Labour Day and recognize the contributions of the working class to the overall development of Guyana.
The PYO  salutes the  workers and urges them to stay strong and committed despite the Opposition attacks against efforts by the PPP/C Government to not only enhance their social wellbeing but to also provide an economic climate which will increase competition for the nation’s  labour force and the many benefits which will be derived from such an environment.
