$40,000 fine for stealing fellow employee’s cellphone

AN EMPLOYEE of Singh Seafood appeared before Magistrate Allan Wilson, yesterday, charged with simple larceny. Anand Singh (no address given) pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars which said, on Saturday, April 27, at Ruimveldt, Georgetown, he stole one Blackberry cellphone, valued $46,000, property of Abiola Assannah.
Police Corporal Renetta Bentham, prosecuting, said, that day about 14:45 hrs, the virtual complainant put the instrument to charge on a table and went into the office of her boss.
When she returned, however, she discovered that it was missing and, during their investigation, the defendant handed over the stolen article to the Police, the prosecutor said.  
Singh told the Court that he had lost his about two weeks ago and himself and Assannah are good friends. But, not being aware that the phone belonged to her, he hid it with the intention to replace his that was stolen by someone.
He told the magistrate: “Sir, I was under the influence of alcohol. I was drinking alozane.”
When the magistrate asked him:”What is that?” he replied: “A very expensive drink.”
Singh was fined $40,000 with the alternative of 12 months imprisonment.
