International Dance Day
In 1982, the International Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI), a UNESCO institution, created International Dance Day. This day is celebration every year on April 29 to honour the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), the creator of modern ballet. And every year, a message from an outstanding choreographer or dancer is circulated throughout the world. The personality is selected by the founding entity, which collaborates with the World Dance Alliance, a co-operating member of ITI.
International Dance Day and the message broadcast on that day have one intention, which is to unite the field of dance by celebrating this art form and revelling in its universality to cross all political, cultural, and ethnic barriers and bring people together in peace and friendship with a commemorative language.
In 2009, the International Dance Day Committee (IDDC) of Guyana was formed through an idea initiated by the Classique Dance Company’s Clive Prowell. Members of the Dance Fraternity formed the committee, a logo was designed, and a motto was coined.
