Fire destroys Overwinning house, other building saved

A FIRE, diagnosed to be electrical in origin, destroyed a dwelling house at Overwinning, West Bank Berbice, last Saturday night.

Chief Fire Officer, Marlon Gentle reported, yesterday, that four other buildings were saved from the 19:00 hrs blaze.
He said it resulted from an internal overload powering more than one component (drop cord) that was left on while the occupant was out.
Gentle said, given the magnitude of the conflagration, when the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) was summoned and arrived at the scene, after a 20 minutes drive from New Amsterdam, the structure was totally engulfed.
The Officer-in-Charge made the decision to utilise one of the two tankers to suppress the flames while the other took water from a nearby canal to save the four neighbouring houses.
Wayne Taylor, 44, the lone resident of the place was at work when the fire broke out and the premises were reduced to a pile of rubble within minutes.
Meanwhile, in another catastrophe at Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara, a two-storey apartment building was saved from a conflagration on Saturday.
Gentle said that occurrence was suspicious in nature and investigations are ongoing as the GFS continues to probe it.
He said the occupants managed to exit the residence and the fire was contained without anyone being injured.
