A FIFTY-THREE-YEAR-OLD woman and her visiting companion from overseas are hospitalised with several wounds about their bodies, following a cutlass attack on them at Bloomfield Village, Corentyne, Berbice, shortly after 06:00 hrs on Thursday.
The wounded are Shairah Bacchus, of Third Street, Bloomfield and Jameel Inayet, 47, of New York, in the United States (U.S.).
According to Mohammed Bacchus, his sister, Shairah and Inayet were in bed but she got up to empty a utensil containing body fluids.
She had just walked down the back stairs, with the intention of disposing the waste when he heard her scream and, as he rushed towards her, about a few feet away; he saw the attacker, whom he recognised, jumping over the fence and fleeing.
He said his sibling was dealt a chop on her left shoulder, partially severing the hand on which there were also deep, incised wounds. She also had injuries on her left leg and left ear.
Her brother related that, after seeing her condition, he attempted to lift her from off the ground but, due to the severity of her injuries, he left her and went in search of a vehicle, which, subsequently, conveyed her and Inayet to Port Mourant Hospital, Corentyne, prior to her being transferred to New Amsterdam Hospital, also in Berbice.
However, she was sent on to Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) while Inayet remains a patient in New Amsterdam.
Inayet had gone to her rescue, as well, after hearing her scream and he suffered chops, too, on his back.
Mohamed Bacchus told Guyana Chronicle that his sister had previously cooked for her assailant when he boarded at her home but had stopped doing so, five weeks ago, after he failed to contribute financially.
Inayet, a migrant living overseas, came to Guyana on March 17, expecting to spend a while.
The assailant has since reported to Whim Police Station, from where the investigations are being conducted.
