REGION 2 Chairman, Mr. Parmanand Persaud, accompanied by Town Clerk, Ms. Diana Critchlow, APNU Councillor, Mr. Prince Shepherd, and the Regional Engineer, inspected the drainage network and streets at Danielstown village, Essequibo Coast last Wednesday, and concluded that the drains in the village are kept in fairly good condition, while some of the streets are built with crusher run and all-weather surface materials.
Mr. Persaud said his visit to the community was at the request of APNU RDC Councillor, Mr. Prince Shepherd to identify problems affecting the village.
Mr. Persaud and entourage walked about the village, and had discussions with several residents on drainage. The Chairman was shown a drain that was blocked by an old fishing boat, which prevented it from flowing. Mr. Persaud, in finding a solution to the problem on the ground, called the owner of the boat, who lived nearby, and advised him to remove the obstacle out of the waterway, which he agreed to do.
The APNU councillor also showed the Chairman an old and dilapidated wooden bridge that connects two streets, saying that the Regional Administration had been requested to construct a new concrete culvert to connect the streets, but this was never done. However Town Clerk, Ms. Diana Critchlow informed the APNU councillor that funds to construct the concrete culvert have been approved in the council’s budget for this year.
Mr. Persaud, who observed several yards overtaken with bushes, urged the APNU councillor to encourage residents to keep their surroundings clean and tidy. He also urged residents not to dump garbage in drainage trenches or on street parapets.
Mr. Shepherd also showed the chairman some drains that have blocked up with weeds and bushes for many years, causing stagnant water that cannot be drained into the main drainage canal. Chairman Persaud promised that those drains would be desilted with a light excavator machine.
