YET again Guyanese talented film producer Mahadeo Shivraj has climbed the production charts with a stirring masterpiece in honour of Guyana’s 175th Anniversary of the arrival of the East Indians.
Shivraj has now produced a riveting movie dubbed ‘Brown Sugar Too Bitter for Me’ that depicts the clashes in societal classes and the economic differences encountered when the upper class weds an individual of supposedly lower status.
This movie tells a gripping story and brings to life the everyday issue of differences in economic levels in present day society that eventually result in segregation between ‘society classes’ in the past and even today.

In an interview yesterday, Shivraj revealed that this is his third production, and also that a fourth film will be released later this year. He emphasized that ‘Brown Sugar Too Bitter for Me’ is a rich and riveting musical drama that showcases thirteen original songs, all produced by Guyanese musicians.
He added that the movie is indeed a dazzling masterpiece and will certainly tug at the heartstrings of viewers, and it also entails a brilliant and arresting fusion of creativity that vividly depicts the saying that “God created man, but man created boundaries”. The movie reminds that this should not be.
According to the producer, this movie is indeed a beautiful reminder that ‘people should not see each other as different’. He added that the movie strikingly captures the life of an ordinary East Indian cane cutter, brought to work here on the sugar estates during the period of ‘indentured labour’.
He noted that the movie showcases with gripping intensity his struggles as he fought vehemently to ensure his children do not suffer like he did or get caught in the tentacles of ‘societal economic differences’.
Shivraj also indicated that the movie comes as a ‘springboard production’ evolving out of discussion between himself and New York-based Guyanese playwright, Somnauth Narine to transform what was formerly a play into screenplay, and eventually the movie.
He said at first he had desired a musical drama, but later made it a screenplay and also a movie. He said in keeping with local trends he took a ‘Guyanese swing to things’ and have included thirteen original songs, all produced by overseas-based Guyanese artistes in the likes of Terry Gajraj, Anant Hansraj, Nadeer Bacchus, Princess Anisa, Prakz, Michael Muneshwar and a few others.
The movie will also see dazzling performances coming from Guyanese actors Michael Ignatius, Aditya Persaud, US-based actress Radhika Olharte, Shivannie Latchman, Chronicle’s own Akash Persaud and others.
