A man escaped being shot and injured when police opened fire on him after he had assaulted his female companion while they were having a meal at Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) fast food outlet on Vlissengen Road, Georgetown. The incident led ranks on a chase, a short distance away.
The man, whose name was not given, was grazed by a bullet in his back which was fired from a Beretta sub-machine gun after he managed to escape from the KFC outlet after severely beating his girlfriend during a row.
He also damaged a glass window KFC at the KFC outlet and threatened staffers after the woman ran into the kitchen in a bid to escape the blows and he was barred from entering. He attempted to pull out a knife and then ran out of the KFC outlet.
The police showed up quickly and followed him discharging several rounds which ended at the abandoned gas station near Rubis Service Station on Vlissengen Road.
He however, scaled the fence and was grazed by a bullet but was cornered and taken into police custody at Alberttown Police Station.
An employee at the fast food outlet told the Guyana Chronicle that the couple came in and ordered and paid for a two-piece meal and a biscuit and sat to have the meal during which a heated quarrel started.
She said it was around 16:00 hours and the man began cuffing away at the hapless woman, who cried out for help and during the assault he cuffed the glass windows of KFC shattering it.
At this point, the employee said the woman escaped into KFC’s kitchen and he followed her but was barred from entering after she stood in the doorway noting that the woman’s face was swollen.
She stated that he was about to take out a knife but she screamed and he ran out of the building with the police in hot pursuit.
