Court action over bonus… GDF officers sent off pending determination

THE Guyana Defence Force (GDF) announced, on Wednesday, that, in view of recent court proceedings filed by four officers against the army, they have been relieved of their duties.
A press statement said that, given the serious nature of the matters, the implications, the avoidance of any conflict of interest which may arise and to allow  the officers to pursue their legal matters, the Defence Board has instructed that they be relieved of their current appointments.

The decision is effective immediately, without prejudice to leave entitlements and pecuniary benefits, until the determination of their matters, the statement explained.
It said the Chief of Staff (COS), Commodore Gary Best is expected to respond to the lawsuit later this month.
He had, previously, made a decision, last December, to withhold the bonuses for more than 100 officers and other ranks because they had disciplinary issues in the Army or were facing disciplinary charges.
Before then, President Donald Ramotar had awarded the annual bonus, of one month’s salary without any condition attached, to all military personnel.
