SPEEDBOAT commuters at the Parika stelling are now benefiting from a new timber stairway built to ensure their safety.
General Manager of the Transport and Harbours Department (T&HD), Marclene Merchant, said that in addition to the new stairway, other works are being undertaken at the stelling, including the elevation of the vehicle scale.
She explained that the scale and hut are being elevated as they are affected at high tide. The ministry is also working on securing adequate space at the stelling for the vehicles approaching the scale. These vehicles are hindered by the hire car park that is located close to the area where the scale is set up.
Merchant also stated that the old cargo bond at the stelling has been demolished and a store room built in its stead. Other projects include remedial work on the main carriageway.
These works fall under the T&HD’s plans of up-grading the various stellings in 2013.
