DEFENDING champions and the nation’s number one team Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United, have placed themselves in a comfortable position to retain their title in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF)-sponsored 2012/2013 Super League competition, at the end of the first round.
Having trailed leaders BK Western Tigers by five points with three more first round fixtures to be contested, Alpha displayed their true championship material, by scoring 23 goals in their final three matches while conceding one, to move to the top of the ladder.
The first to suffer at their hands were BCC Rosignol United, who received a 13-0 thrashing, followed by BK Western Tigers who were drubbed 5-0 and in their final first round match, which was contested against Den Amstel Porknockers last Wednesday, they lost their clean slate but still managed to come away with a 5-1 victory.
With such a surge, they now lead the points table heading into the second round with 22 points, having won seven of their nine matches while losing one and drawing the other, but still hold a five-point advantage over the second-placed BK Western Tigers and an additional two more than Pele Football Club who sit in third position.
Buxton United are in fourth on 14 points, followed by BV/Triumph United, Milerock and Uitvlugt Warriors who all have 10 points, with BV/Triumph United holding the fifth position on goal difference, following their 3-0 defeat over Uitvlugt Warriors, on the same night Alpha defeated Den Amstel Porknockers.
Amelia’s Ward Panthers hold the number eight position with 9 points, followed by BCC Rosignol United on 8 and Den Amstel Porknockers in the cellar position with 7 points.
All the teams will be looking to up their performance and accumulate more points in the second round which kicks off on Sunday with five matches across the country, especially with the knowledge of the two top teams being selected to represent Guyana in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championships.
At Uitvlugt, BK Western Tigers will look to defeat the home team whom they face from 16:00hrs while in Linden at the Wisburg ground, a double-header fixture is set to kick off at 14:00hrs featuring Amelia’s Ward Panthers and BV/Triumph United, followed by Milerock against BCC Rosignol United from 16:00hrs.
At the Georgetown Football Club ground in Georgetown, Buxton United and Den Amstel Porknockers will start that double-header fixture at 18:00hrs, which will be followed by the Alpha United versus Pele clash at 20:00hrs.
