TAAMOG strongly condemns police brutality in Marudi Mountains

THE Amerindian Action Movement of Guyana (TAAMOG) has strongly condemned the “high-handed police actions of brutality and criminality” against small miners in the Marudi Mountains, Deep South Rupununi and calls on the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Leroy Brumell, to quickly take action to ensure that the culpable officers are brought to justice. TAAMOG, in a statement signed by Mr. Peter Persaud, noted that while it  is aware that the small miners were not legal miners, such brutality and criminality unleashed against them were not warranted by the police officers who were hell-bent on disgracing the image of the Guyana Police Force.
TAAMOG said it received reliable information that two men who were part of the police squad and who wore civilian clothing and were armed with big guns were not police officers. It is urging the  police commissioner to also question these two persons on the role they played in the police officers squad in the Marudi Mountains and whose interests they were serving.
But while TAAMOG fully supports the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) in its operation El Dorado exercise to stop illegal mining in the length and breadth of Guyana, it rejects totally the use of excessive force of brutality and criminality by the engaged law enforcement agency in the execution of its duties.
The Amerindian body said it supports the strong  upholding of the standard operational procedures (SOP) for the successful and peaceful achievement of the main objective.
TAAMOG is currently in empathy with those hurt and traumatised as a result of the excessive force used by the police squad in the Marudi Mountains.
