Minister within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Norman Whittaker has indicated that the ministry is yet to appoint persons to fill senior positions in the Georgetown City Council. The available positions are those of Town Clerk, City Treasurer, City Engineer and Director of Solid Waste Management, the minister said. And at the level of the ministry, advertisements have been put out in the media inviting suitable applicants.
The minister also stated that there were certain advertisements placed in a private newspaper by an unauthorized person from City Hall, and this was brought to the attention of the owner of the newspaper.
He further stated that only the town clerk has that responsibility and authority to place advertisements in the media, and so far that officer has denied doing so.
However, Minister Whittaker noted that he is encouraging all Guyanese who are interested in the vacancies and may have the requirements to apply and make sure the application reaches the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development.
He said also that there will be an interviewing panel comprising of a representative from the workers union, the Georgetown City Council and the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development.
