THE New Amsterdam Town Council is to employ security personnel in an attempt to reduce the frequency of breakages at the Municipal Market.
That was one on the main decisions taken when councillors held the first statutory meeting for 2013. It was their reaction to the burglary at 18 stalls between January 18 and 19 after Town Clerk Sharon Alexander informed that she is in receipt of several applications for such jobs.
The Municipality has been hard pressed since three members of the Constabulary had been placed before the Court for possession of 380 grammes of cannabis (marijuana) in the vicinity of the market last December.
Alexander reminded councillors that they previously agreed not to hire more constables but to recruit watchmen instead.
“Several persons have come in seeking employment for constables but I have told them that we don’t have vacancies for constables only for watchmen/security,” she stated.
Meanwhile, the Municipality is to use the remaining wood from the demolished Town Hall tower to make security huts around the market compound.
Deputy Mayor Harold Debidin told the Council that there are always reports of breakages at the market but nothing has ever been done to curb its frequency.
The gate, which was damaged by bandits when the 18 stalls were broken into and millions of dollars in booty stolen, is still to be repaired. Some remedial work was done but the contractor is to return to complete the job.
Councillor Joseph Anton contended that the damage should be treated as an emergency.
