First, in the absence of Speaker Trotman, and in a display of callous disregard for an earlier ruling by him, the Deputy Speaker, APNU’s parliamentarian, Deborah Backer, was to shockingly deny Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee his constitutional right to speak, by boastfully declaring that he would not be permitted to do so on ANY matter while she is occupying the Speaker’s chair.
This latest politically childish and very dangerous exploitation by the opposition of a one-seat majority was to prevent Minister Rohee from presenting three related legislative measures, all priorities for the strategic five-year plan of the Guyana Police Force.
But who cares? Certainly not Deputy Speaker, Ms Backer and her colleagues who are bent on pursuing an anti-government agenda, driven by political hatred and absolutely nothing to do with established norms in the conduct of the nation’s business in the National Assembly.
More shocking displays were to follow with the combined APNU/AFC opposition inspiring a boisterous, market-brawl scenario that provoked disgusting responses as well from government MPs that eventually forced a very angry Speaker Trotman to bring the sitting to a close and walk out from the Parliament Chamber, leaving MPs, across the political divide, to engage in their gross insults and obscene behaviour.
The occasion was a scheduled debate on the ‘Fiscal Management and Accountability (Amendment) Bill 2013’. The indecencies flared up while Junior Finance Minister, Mr Juan Edghill was speaking, at times having to loudly shout, and with Speaker Trotman pleading for mutual respect and defending the government MP’s right to speak and be heard.
Finally, in utter disgust, and quite understandably, the Speaker made good on his threat to suspend the sitting of the Assembly and stormed out of the Chamber, deploring the outrageous conduct by MPs.
Well, what the APNU/AFC coalition certainly succeeded in achieving at that session of Parliament was to further interrupt the government’s work agenda on very vital issues pertaining to Guyana’s further development and national security.
This sort of political nonsense MUST stop in the interest of Guyana and ALL its people. The APNU and AFC have NO mandate for their post-election conspiracy to disrupt the peaceful social and economic development of this nation.
They separately opposed the incumbent PPPC at the November 28, 2011 general elections, and ended up mustering a mere one-seat majority, and opportunistically using it in their own narrow, selfish political interest.
Now, they want to further abuse that one-seat majority by indulging in recurring immature political behavior — even openly showing their contempt for rulings and pleas from Mr Trotman, their combined choice as Speaker.
Is it that APNU’s David Granger and the AFC’s Khemraj Ramjattan have become so closely bonded in their thirst for power — at all cost — that they have no qualms about openly embarrassing Speaker Trotman?
And how will all this end? Could it be realised in the lyrics of Doris Day’s once very popular song in Guyana, ‘Que Sera, Sera’: What will be, will be?
We shall find out, perhaps sooner than later. The current disruptive and politically puerile behaviour of the APNU/AFC alliance cannot be sustained in this nation’s best interest.
¿Que Sera, Sera?
