PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – Former West Indies Women captain Ann Browne-John has expressed confidence in the ability of the current team to prevail over Australia in Sunday’s final to win the ICC 50 overs World Cup in India.
Browne-John’s prediction follows Wednesday’s narrow victory by the regional side over Australia in their final match of the Super Six phase of the competition.

Now vice-president of the Trinidad and Tobago Women’s Cricket Association, Browne-John says she believes the women will follow in the footsteps of the men who claimed the ICC T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka last October.
“I think we have a very good team and once we click on the day and everything works right we can beat any team in the world,” said Browne-John, also a former coach of the regional side.
“I always felt that they had the potential, they just had to settle down and do the work. So once we put our minds to it like we have done in the last three matches, I feel that we can be the world champions.”
West Indies women ended the Super Six phase of the tournament unbeaten after winning matches against New Zealand, South Africa and Australia.
Their eight-run victory over Australia on Wednesday was a first as well as their entry into the final of the World Cup.
“What we noticed is that the bottom of their batting is a bit fragile,” said Browne-John.
“It has not been tested much because they have always been good at the top. When we tested it … we saw they did not have much down below.”
West Indies squeezed into the Super Six on a good run-rate after losing two of their group matches.
Browne-John says the regional team is well balanced and the bowlers will be able to defend good totals.
“Once they do that and put a good score on the board, we have a really good chance,” said the former captain.
“I think (the bowling attack) is enough to hold any team once we can have some runs to play with.”
West Indies and Australia meet in the final on Sunday.
