R&R 11-race cycling billed for Saturday : … 40-mile road race set for February 24

THIS year’s cycling season is set to continue this Saturday with the 22nd annual R&R International-sponsored 11-race programme at the inner circuit of the National Park. The event is being held in observance of the Guyana’s 43rd Republic Anniversary and will get under way at 09:00hrs.
The day’s activities, which are being organised by national cycling coach Hassan Mohamed, will see seasoned campaigner, Robin Persaud look to successfully defend the feature 35-lap School Boys and Invitational race.
Persaud won last year’s event main race in a time of one hour 17 minutes 34 seconds (01h:17m:34s), but will face stiff competition in his defence of the title from the likes of long-time rival Alonzo Greaves, Warren McKay, Geron Williams, John Charles, Paul DeNobrega and Raynauth Jeffrey among others.
DeNobrega won the Juniors/Juveniles 10-lap race last year in a time of 23 minutes, 27 seconds (23m: 23s), but a new champion will be crowned on Saturday since DeNobrega has graduated to the senior ranks.
Raymond Newton will be looking to keep a hold on the Veterans Under-50 title, having won the 2012 edition in a time of 11 minutes 35 seconds (11m:35s).
Meanwhile, R&R International will also sponsor the annual 40-mile road race on February 24 on the West Demerara roadways to coincide with Mashramani celebrations as well.
This event, which is also in its 22nd year, will ride off from the Demerara Harbour Bridge at 09:00hrs, proceed to Bushy Park, Parika, before returning to the point of origin for the finish.
Persaud is also defending champion of the senior category of that race, having won last year’s event in a time of one hour 45 minutes 16 seconds (01h:45m:16s). A new champion will emerge in the Junior division, which was won last year by DeNobrega.
Talim Shaw will be the man to beat in the Open Veterans race.
Former cyclist and current Managing Director of R&R International, Jacob Rambarran, will be on hand to assist in the presentation of prizes at the conclusion of both events.
