Mazaruni River tragedy : Five bodies recovered, three brought to city

THE body of 52-year-old Jewan Seeram is the latest to be found in the Mazaruni River tragedy that left nine persons missing. His body was recovered last evening. Meanwhile the bodies of Christopher Narine, 21, of Parika Façade, and Zaheer Baksh, 35, of Cane Ville were yesterday taken to Parika and later brought to the city, and are currently at the Lykens Funeral Parlour. The bodies were among two others which were recovered following the boat mishap in the Mazaruni River on Tuesday. Among those also recovered following the accident were Jermaine Calistro and Ulric Grimes, who were recovered on Tuesday and Wednesday night.

Yesterday, relatives of the latest recovered victims were present at the Parika Stelling and were overwhelmed with grief.

The bodies were taken to the police station nearby. According to reports reaching this newspaper, the remains of the men arrived at the Parika landing just before 11:00hrs yesterday.

When the Chronicle visited the location yesterday, after 15.00hrs, the bodies were still there. Relatives of Baksh expressed disappointment and frustration that no hearse was present to take the bodies to the city.

One relative said that he offered to take the bodies to the city, but the police did not allow this, saying that they must handle the corpses.

Meanwhile the aunt of Christopher Narine said that she last saw her nephew five days before he went to the mining district. She said that her nephew worked with her cousin who operates a cargo vessel taking items into camps and living districts beyond the Bartica community.

Yesterday, when the undertakers were removing the bodies, it was observed that the body of Zaheer was pierced through and through with a piece of wood.

The police at the Parika Police Station were forced to lock the gates of the station after the hearse arrived to take the bodies away, as a crowd had gathered and persons were heard crying loudly.
Within minutes the chain-link fence of the police station was plastered with persons as they tried to get a glimpse of the remains of the men.
Yesterday the Guyana Chronicle was informed that as the search continues for the rest of the men, it is very unlikely that when they are found, their bodies will be in no condition to be transported out of the area.
