President Ramotar confirms new Demerara River crossing planned

PRESIDENT Donald Ramotar confirmed yesterday that the government is looking to build a new crossing over the Demerara River. Speaking during a press conference at Office of the President, on Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Georgetown, he acknowledged the need for a new bridge because of the volumes of traffic and the amount of people and goods that constantly traverse the existing Demerara Harbour Bridge.
In addition, the Head of State mentioned that he is very much aware of some of the difficulties people have with transportation, especially with the opening of new housing schemes and more people moving and travelling.
President Ramotar disclosed that he has requested Transport Minister Robeson Benn to come up with a plan to see how, at the soonest possible time, the situation, as it relates to transport, can be dealt with.
“So we’re working on that and one of the projects, of course, would be increasing the capacity of the Demerara River crossing,” he said.
Mr. Ramotar revealed that some proposals are already in but that they will be looking for more and making a decision on what kind of model will be used for the new bridge.
Meanwhile, a feasibility study on the new Demerara River crossing was recently completed and it determined that the best site is close to the existing bridge. The design of the infrastructure is to be unveiled soon.
