THE government seems reluctant to do or say some things, perhaps in fear of a possible serious reaction by the opposition and their supporters. The racial bogey man is alive and well in Guyana’s politics and if you are not careful he will get you.
Hopefully, he cannot get everyone for saying unpopular things. The M&CC is a serious and long standing problem for the residents of Georgetown and the nation at large.
Any responsible political leader should recognise the need to replace the M&CC with an Interim Management Committee (IMC) until local elections can be held which is overdue. Unless such elections are held in 2013, the sooner an IMC is appointed the better. Surely, there must be a law that can be used against the five officials for their transgressions, and not just say that their actions were not up to a criminal level. Too many actions seem to fall in this (absurd) category.
The opposition claim of the government not providing enough money or allowing the M&CC to levy more taxes, is laughable in the face of their record of tax collecting and misuse of funds. This is a situation that cries out for government intervention by appointing an IMC or taking over some functions like sanitation, road and irrigation from the city until the M&CC can once again do it.
Unfortunately, the will and support for such a step will not be currently found within the governing and opposition parties – politics before patriotism. Speaking of governance, why has the government not made public every effort made to see that the Linden agreement is enforced as quickly as possible with constant updates to the people of Linden and Guyana. Regardless of who is a committee chairman, the results will have to be acceptable to government and Guyanese. Propaganda, not public relations seem to work better in Guyana. Government needs to use one against the other.
