Man accused of armed robbery on family remanded

GREGORY Howes, 41, of Lot 41 Russel Street, Charlestown, has been charged with committing the recent armed robbery on a couple at their Robb Street home, also in Georgetown.

He appeared before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell yesterday and was remanded to prison after he pleaded not guilty to three counts of robbery under arms.
Particulars of the offences said, last December 29, being armed with a gun, he robbed Marlene Hussein of a quantity of gold jewellery valued $1M; Arlene Hussein of gold jewels and money to the total value of $660,000 and Jaclyn Hussein of $300,000 cash and gold and diamond jewellery worth $2.3M.
Police Sergeant Alexis Hosanna-David, prosecuting, said the crimes were committed at around 19:30 hrs when the defendant and two other men entered the house through an open door, held the virtual complainants at gunpoint, demanded cash and jewellery and then made good their escape.
However, the following day, one of the victims saw the defendant in a game shop and called the police, the prosecutor said, successfully objecting to bail for Howes, based on the prevalence and seriousness of the crime.
The prosecutor added that the defendant’s accomplices are still on the run and it is likely that he would interfere with the witnesses if granted pre-trial liberty.
Defence Counsel, Adrian Thompson had claimed Howes, was elsewhere when the robbery occurred and that no proper identification of him was done.
The case is to be called, again, on January 9.
