Region 5 completes 2012 work programme

THE administration of Region 5 (Mahaica/Berbice) has successfully completed a $1.6 billion work programme for 2012, officials have said.

altRegional Chairman Bindrabhan Bisnauth said that the region spent $1.32 billion under current expenditure for administration, for maintenance of administrative buildings and infrastructure throughout the region and $267M under a capital budget for new projects to improve its Health, Educational, Agriculture and Public Works Services.
Educational services took the bulk of current expenditure with a sum of $846M being expended on education delivery including the execution of “an aggressive” programme of maintenance of several schools and education facilities within the region, Bisnauth said.
The maintenance for education delivery included upgrading of sanitary blocks and the cleaning and clearing of the compounds.alt
Combined with expenditure on capital projects the total sum spent in this area amounted to $912 million dollars, Bisnauth reported.
Capital works for better education delivery included the construction of teacher’s quarters near the school at the Mahaicony riverine community of Karamat, the construction of annexes at a number of primary and secondary schools to cater for a rapidly increasing school population and effective procurement of furniture for both teachers and students.
The school feeding programme and the supply of fuels and lubricants for transporting students in the Abary and Mahaicony Creeks to and from school on a daily basis were also two activities facilitated by the allocation.
Maintenance of the drainage and irrigation systems for agriculture as well as residential drainage systems were another major source of expenditure on both the current and capital budgets attracting a total of approximately $188M.
Under this aspect of its work programme the region maintained and upgraded several farm to market roads, replaced defective box kokers and maintained sluices along the coast.
altThe administration also assisted each of its ten Neighborhood Democratic Councils with residential drainage projects and street maintenance projects requested by these councils.

Total expenditure on public works amounted to approximately $182M.
Projects completed included the construction of several community streets, rehabilitation of streets in the housing schemes, and construction of sideline dams.
Expenditure on health services amounted to $270M under current budget and $$36 million under capital works.
Projects completed for improvement of health services delivery under the capital budget included the extension of the Rehabilitation Centre at Fort Wellington, construction of a reservoir and water filtering mechanism at Mahaicony Hospital and major rehabilitation and reconstruction of the central air conditioning network and units at this hospital.
The administration had also used funds allocated to health delivery to install air condition units at the Health Centre at Ithaca, West Bank Berbice and Biaboo in Mahaicony to help to facilitate the safe storage of medical supplies.
Bisnauth said that the region had given priority to improvement of health and education services in 2012.
He said that ensuring the Technical/Vocational institution at Mahaicony is fully utilized; that the  home for the destitute at Onverwagt, West Coast Berbice is up and running and that more intensive repairs are carried out on the Burma Branch Road, Mahaicony will be three main objectives of the administration for 2013.
