Christmas Day robbery defendant refused bail

MARK Joseph, 18, of Lot 19 Hogg Street, Albouystown, Georgetown, was refused bail yesterday on a robbery charge. He appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, on December 25, he robbed Andrew Yaw of one ‘Gluck’ firearm.
Police Corporal Vinetta Pindar, prosecuting, successfully objected to pre-trial freedom for the defendant, pointing out that he is likely to face another robbery charge.
The prosecutor said, on Christmas Day, the virtual complainant, who is a rural constable, was in Camp Street when he attempted to arrest the defendant for, allegedly, committing the crime in the same area.
The defendant snatched the gun from Yaw’s waist and made an attempt to escape but was shot on his right leg, the prosecutor said.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Clyde Forde, representing the defendant, said the latter was in the vicinity when he heard gunshots and ran and was still hit by a bullet.
The lawyer said Joseph has no antecedents and he is not a flight risk but the magistrate ruled in favour of the prosecution and postponed the case to January 25, 2013.
