Six dead, one missing in Pomeroon River accident Chairman, OLPF staff escape unhurt…

SIX persons were killed, one was rescued and one is reportedly still missing following an accident in the Essequibo River at 17.00hrs yesterday.
The Guyana Chronicle was informed that a boat which belonged to the Regional

Administration of Region 2 was returning from an outreach when the tragedy occurred.
Reports reaching this publication stated that the boat was returning from St. Monica in the Pomeroon, after completing an exercise of distributing computers as part of the One Laptop Per Family programme.
Region 2 Chairman Parmanand Persaud, who was in the area to hand over a tractor to the community on behalf of the Amerindian Affairs Ministry, was also in the boat at the time of the accident.

It was raining heavily and everyone in the boat was covered with a rubberized blanket when another boat with a 150 horsepower engine ran under the bow of the Region 2 boat.
It is suspected that most of the dead in the other boat would have suffered broken necks.
Regional Chairman Parmanand Persaud said that no one in the Region 2 boat was injured nor were they required to seek medical attention.
The police used the Region 2 boat to travel back to the location to retrieve the bodies and the damaged boat.
Contacted last evening, Transport minister Robeson Benn said that he was aware of the accident and that  he was receiving updates from the Maritime Administration Department and the Coast Guard.
