Akram: Retirement up to Tendulkar

FORMER Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram believes Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar should be left to decide when he will retire.

Tendulkar’s form in the recent Test series against England has led some critics to suggest the 39-year-old should quit the sport to protect his reputation.
But Akram will be sad to see Tendulkar retire, stating the world would miss his talents, and believes the Indian batsman has done enough for the sport of cricket to be allowed to bow out when he wants.
“I think he’s done enough for cricket,” Akram said. “He’s broken every record in the world.
“He is definitely, well not definitely, he is the best batsman the world has ever seen with 100 hundreds at international level, highest run-getter at Test level, highest run-getter in one-day internationals.
“I think it entirely depends on him what he wants to do. If he decides to retire after this, I think the world will miss him and he’s been the perfect brand ambassador for his country and a role model for his country as well.”
Akram, who played 104 Test matches and 356 ODIs for Pakistan, also thinks it is time India and Pakistan play each other at cricket again.
“I’ve always said to people … that the politics should be kept away from sport but what’s happening in India and Pakistan is that they play every other sport,” Akram said.
“Kabaddi, hockey, wrestling but not cricket.
“I think it’s about time.
“The public in Pakistan and India, the people want to see players play against each other.” (CA)
