Number 68 Primary wins spelling competition amongst 10 schools

THE Department of Education, in collaboration with the New Amsterdam Branch of Republic Bank, staged a Grade Five Spelling Competition in which Number 68 Primary School emerged winner after contesting against ten schools. The contest, which was held in the Berbice Chamber of Commerce Boardroom, Chapel Street, was not without its hiccups, as two schools, Sandvoort and Cropper Primary, were disqualified.
Those learning institutions had submitted grade six students instead of the required lower grade.
Coordinator Eon Carter said a list of 200  words were presented to each school, prior to them competing. However, due to the excellent response by the students, additional words were given on the day of the rivalry to determine the winner.
The other winners are Alness and Wellington primaries, from the Corentyne locations, with the second and third prizes, respectively.
Representative of Republic Bank, Ms. Sheran Lewis, who handed over the prizes, congratulated the children for their effort in a strongly contested game.
