The accused is being represented by Mr. Peter Hugh and the case for the prosecution is being conducted by State Counsel Renita Singh and Konyo Thompson.
Singh told the court, in her opening address, that at the time of his death, Eastman was 33 years old, his wife 50 and they had only been married for about one year.
The prosecutor said the couple was living in Meadowbrook and the crime was committed by the wife administering poison to her husband in porridge which he consumed over a period of time between October 1 and 31, 2007.
Singh said evidence will be led to show that the prisoner was employed as a security guard at GECOM, in Cowan Street, Kingston, Georgetown, where she told a co-worker, Joan Durant that her husband was having an affair and confided in another co-worker whom she asked to accompany her to Caribbean Chemicals.
The prosecutor said the accused told another co-worker, who is a relative of her husband, that he was sick. Upon hearing this, the person, Sandra Griffith went to see her brother-in-law and found him lying on the floor. He was taken to the Woodlands Hospital, by his brother, on October 25 and died on November 1, 2007.
A post-mortem examination was conducted by the Government Pathologist, who gave the cause of death to be gramoxone poisoning.
A confrontation was then held, by the police, between the accused and the co-workers before she was arrested and charged, the court was told.
