CATTLE DESTROYING DARTMOUTH SEA DAM – Some residents also guilty of removing earth, stones from the embankment

SEVERAL Dartmouth village residents on the Essequibo Coast in Region 2 have reported that cows, numbering more than one hundred every day, are destroying the sea dam embankment that protects the concrete structure and the village from the raging Atlantic Ocean.

They contend that cattle farmers are using the government sea dam and reserve to graze cattle on a daily basis, causing serious erosion problems on the embankment. Reports are that cattle have also destroyed the parapets of a main drainage trench near the embankment. One resident said many yards are flooded because of the blocked drainage trench.
Residents declare the situation as getting worse, and are calling on the Paradise/Evergreen NDC, which has its office in the village, to address the problem.
Reports are also that some residents are digging up and removing earth and stones from the embankment, adding to the erosion problems.
Residents are calling for rangers to monitor the sea defence, and not to allow persons to graze cows on the sea dam embankment.
