ST. CUTHBERT’s Mission nestles on the left bank of the pristine Mahaica River about half a mile inland and approximately sixty-five miles from the coast.
This village, with a population of 1400 residents, can also be accessed by trail from the Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
Toshao of St. Cuthbert’s Village Council, Luke Simon, disclosed that agriculture has been the mainstay of the community over the past 120 years of its existence, but production has declined in recent years, mainly due to the exodus of able-bodied males from the village, being lured by the prospect of more lucrative employment in the gold fields.
Agriculture production in the village is at the moment at an individual or subsistence level, but villagers plan to resume large-scale production.
During a recent visit by Minister within the Ministry of Agriculture, Alli Baksh, St Cuthbert’s villagers were given assurances of support in this regard.
St Cuthbert’s residents also see the village, with its various attractions, including culinary delights, as a major tourist destination. Toshao Luke Simon has disclosed that, with assistance from Government, the village will shortly construct a tourist lodge which, when completed, will cater for a minimum of sixteen tourists per week.
