SAD IRONY FOR GRANGER

GIVEN ALL their anti-government posturing, it is a sad irony that the PNCR/APNU leader, David Granger, should now be urging the people of Linden to “remain mobilised” for fulfilment of an agreement last April with the PPPC-led administration of President Donald Ramotar.
The irony is that had Granger himself “remained engaged” with implementation of the accord, as reached with the government at a meeting involving both President Ramotar and Prime Minister, Samuel Hinds, the tragedies of deaths, injuries and billions of dollars in destruction to state-owned and private properties by arson and other criminal acts last July in Linden, could never have occurred.
The sad reality is that even as Prime Minister Samuel Hinds was informing a then session of Parliament on April 19 about the details of the agreement, Opposition Leader Granger was being driven into a defensive posture against the unfolding political tactics of the minority AFC leadership as an extension of what they had already employed at Linden during the campaign for last year’s general elections.
Having undermined the PNCR during the elections, the AFC felt it was simply being consistent in calling some of the political shots when came the time to “mobilise” against the proposed restructuring of the electricity tariff for Lindners to bring it in line with residential consumers across Guyana. Unfortunately, finding himself being out-manoeuvred on the ground in Linden by the AFC, including the spreading of falsehoods among members of the Region 10 Council, Ganger somersaulted on the agreement. It had been carefully reached with the government to satisfy the needs of Lindeners on a broad range of issues, and also addressed the restructuring of the electricity tariff for residential consumers.
The horrors that subsequently unfolded in Linden are now well known across Guyana and beyond. Nevertheless, it is ironical to have the PNCR/APNU leader now calling on Lindeners to remain committed to the realisation of the package of developments as listed in the accord reached with the government.
As the rest of Guyana also would recall, the agreement provided for, apart from restructuring of the electricity tariff, establishment of the high-level independent Commission of Inquiry into the tragedies and destruction that occurred in Linden; creation of a Land Selection Committee (LSC); establishment of a television station in the bauxite town; reactivation of the Linden Enterprise Network (LEN) as well as BOSAI fulfilling its obligations in relation to the dust-nuisance as then afflicted the community.
Lindeners would know of the benefits to flow from implementation of the agreement reached and, in their own time would come, if not already done, to show appreciation for the government’s own commitment to honour the pledges made to improve their general welfare —-even as the APNU/PNCR leadership continues to cope with the manoeuvres from the AFC to further diminish their support and influence.
For the government the business of this nation comes first, not opportunistic political deals such as what may now be haunting the APNU/PNCR under Granger’s leadership.
