M&CC calls on citizenry to dispose of rubbish responsibly –finances cannot deal with additional garbage challenges

THE Mayor and City Council (M&CC) is calling on citizens to spare a thought for the environment during their Christmas Season cleaning.

PRO Royston King has issued a release declaring that the Council’s resources are overstretched and cannot deal with additional garbage illegally dumped on parapets and roadsides during this period.
Many residents have started their Christmas and end-of-year cleaning, but are throwing the trash onto city thoroughfares.
According to King, old mattresses, refrigerators, stoves, washers, broken chairs, old curtains, tree trimmings, old wood and a host of other things are being dumped in certain open areas. This is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated; therefore those bent on creating an unhealthy situation in the city, and on fostering attitudes and actions that do not exactly reflect neighbourliness, must know that the City Constabulary has been alerted, and will be taking strong action against all “litter bugs” and those who are involved in unfriendly environmental actions in local communities.
Environmental health officers will also intensify their inspections and allied activities in different sections of the city with a clear focus on providing receptacles for refuse collection, the release indicated.
All residents of Georgetown should have suitable containers to properly dispose of their refuse.

The council is also calling on corporations and companies to be more responsible in disposing of their waste materials.
The Council says it is still worried by citizens’ lack of sensitivity and the absence of environmentally sensible actions towards disposal of waste and endangering the health of the environment.
