THE Guyana Police Force (GPF) has given the assurance that its ranks will be more active on the ground as regards preventing the use of squibs during the Festive Season.
According to the GPF there will be a special alert for persons who are throwing squibs, with a view to arresting and prosecuting the perpetrators.
Squib throwing has become a nuisance despite several persons who were caught in this act being arrested.
Some residents are urging stronger police presence in an effort to reduce the use of firecrackers, while others are contending that the continuous act of using the illegal squibs must ceased since they are prohibited.
Another young man who wishes to remain anonymous told the Guyana Chronicle that the GPF should implement different measures to curb this act. The use of squibs at events which attract large crowds scare people away, and as such go home earlier than usual.
However as the Festive Season is approaching and the throwing of squibs continue both shoppers and sellers are contending there is no other choice left as they have to abide with the annoying sound of firecrackers.
One vendor declared that if squibs are illegal “why do we have to contend with the blasting off of these firecrackers.”
Police are of the view that the squibs are being smuggled into Guyana.
