EVER since the one-seat majority came to power, and I say “came to power” because they behave as if they are the elected government, two things are evident. They put their noses in areas where they should not while in others they are obstacles to progress.
To press home the point I make mention of a letter penned by one Brynmor Pollard captioned: “The acting appointment of the Chancellor and the Chief Justice.” In that letter Mr. Pollard is insinuating that it is the government’s fault that these positions are not made permanent. Well for the learned counsel’s sake I wish to retort that you are so wrong. Those positions are like that due to the intransigence of your opposition friends. They are the ones who stubbornly refuse to affirm the appointments and they do this in such subtle ways that the unsuspecting public would rather believe that it is the government’s fault and come out with these wild unsubstantiated allegations that the government is corrupt. This system came into being during the Corbin years when the opposition begged the government to include them in the decision making process where top positions are concerned. The situation whereby certain positions such as the Police Commissioner, the Chancellor, the Chief Justice and positions of like status, when the opposition is called upon to stamp its approval, they would either approve or deny depending on their assumption of the political leaning of the appointee. Matters of competence and qualification, which is of prime importance for the post is thrown out the window.
I guess the government is now expressing regrets that a glaring blunder was committed when they acceded to the opposition’s request. I am sure they are saying the country would have been well served if they had kept the Burnham constitution when the winner takes all-all in the sense of “all decisions” irrespective of opposition.
The fact that nothing is done by way of progress in Guyana today, paints the real picture of how dense and vindictive the opposition are. Our country is going nowhere while these people perform their mindless antics in parliament; no wonder the other countries in Caricom are way ahead of us. The other territories in CARICOM have the maturity to understand that an elected government MUST do its work unhindered.
