THE entire Mahaicony district, especially the environs of the Mahaicony Secondary School, is gripped with fear and in utter chaos at what is presumably a periodic demonic possession of students.
It was reported about a month ago that what appeared to be a spate of demon possession of varying students had plunged the area and school administration into spine chilling fear and horror, as students seized by this unexplained phenomenon begin to speak in strange voices and languages, while making sounds normally associated with jungle animals; and some have collapsed and frothed at the mouth profusely.
The school’s teachers continue to be baffled and traumatized by the happening, and its origin and cause still remain a mystery to both students and teachers. While at least two teachers openly stated that there were a few minor cases recorded after it all began about close to a month ago, others reported a hair-rising episode that unfolded before many horrified, incredulous eyes on Thursday last.
According to one teacher, who refused to be named, the entire ordeal became worse after the residents of the Amerindian dormitory showed the same manifestation — speaking in different languages and “tongues”, which were not normal in usual conversations and communication with persons on a daily basis.
One child making strange and loud sounds was interrupted by prayers from several senior members of a nearby church, who were overheard praying ordering “a pretensive demon” to leave the bodies of the children.
As the prayers were being said in the premises of the secondary school, two female students were seen running uncontrollably around the compound; and administrators had to close the gates to prevent the affected from making their way out of the compound.
A teacher who asked not to be named said he observed that 90 percent of the children who manifested strange behaviours were of Amerindian ancestry.
They included those from Novar Primary as well as Mahaicony Secondary, and others from the Amerindian Dormitory.
Two male second form students of Mahaicony Secondary told this publication that the school was experiencing this phenomenon for the past week, and persons have been visiting the institution to conduct prayer sessions.
Though this newspaper was not on spot during the actual spectacle, on arrival some time later, after being summoned by a teacher, students were more than ready to relate their terrifying tales.
This newspaper was told that “the demons” seemed more prone to attack a group of Amerindian students who are housed at a mission nearby. One East Coast Demerara teacher who prefers to be anonymous related that the possessions and seizures first began amongst the Amerindian students.
She said each episode of demon possession seemed to have a life of its own, and would spring from student to student, as long as they made eye contact with those already possessed. This teacher said she saw students on more than one occasion attempting to jump through the school’s windows, and she noted that there were cases in which students headed for the Mahaicony River with every intention to jump therein.
She said that when the demons apparently “seized” them, students would sometimes fall to the ground, convulsing terribly and frothing at the corners of the mouth. She related one case when what sounded like a bellowing, sinister voice emanated from a student, indicating that “deh want twenty-nine lives”.
A group of students reported that on entering the school’s washrooms on one occasion, they were chased by what appeared to be an eerie Caucasian woman who seemed to be gliding on thin air.
Students said these happening are sometimes impeding their ability to focus and concentrate while at school, since most times they have to be looking over their shoulders for another horrifying occurrence. Some teachers are “shivering in their boots” but remain tight-lipped because they are afraid of “getting themselves in trouble with the Ministry” if they divulge any information.
Several parents living in the Central Mahaicony district disclosed they are very troubled by the phenomenon, and are contemplating removing their children from the Mahaicony Secondary School. Others are calling on the school’s administration to solicit the services and assistance of genuine religious bodies in an attempt to “pray out or cast out the demons”.
