FARMERS of Mainstay/Whyaka on the Essequibo Coast have started to harvest pineapples.
Reports from the villages, located some 10 miles aback of Anna Regina, said the crop has developed despite the extreme dry weather conditions.
Those who took the fruits to sell at Anna Regina Market on Monday said they are the small crop produce and some said they prefer to sell to the public.
However, most of the organically cultivated fruits on the white, sandy soil will be sold to the factory at Mainstay for the production of organic pineapple chunks that would be exported to the international market.
The Mainstay/Whyaka Amerindian community is the biggest pineapple producer across Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam) and is expected to start producing organic pineapple juices shortly.
