MINISTER of Health Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, in the form of a written response Thursday, told the National Assembly that renewed efforts are underway to ensure the expansion of internet access at the Georgetown School of Nursing.
The Health Minister was responding to a question put forward by Alliance For Change (AFC) Member of Parliament Valerie Garrido-Lowe, as to whether the Health Ministry has plans and how soon for providing Broad Internet Service or Wireless Internet Service to the Georgetown School of Nursing, to assist the students with their research, since the dial – up system which is woefully outdated, has been out of service.
The minister, responding, stated that there is currently limited access at the school and that instructions to upscale the service were given towards the end of last year to the IT Unit of the Ministry.
According to Minister Ramsaran, the execution of this activity has been slothful, but plans are underway to renew the effort to see the service finally installed at the nursing school.
The minister stated that it was noted that a significant number of nursing students already own personal laptop computers and they will be encouraged to use these in a prescribed manner in hot spots created in the school, and that the ministry is in possession of computers and servers which will be installed when the minor civil works are completed.
According to the health minister, internet access is also available for students at the Georgetown Hospital Medical Sciences Library, and this includes access to the PAHO/WHO sponsored libraries. The minister stated that students will be encouraged to use their own computers to access the virtual libraries in a prescribed manner at the school or at home for self study.
