Fourth GPF Inter-Division : Defending champions make successful start

THANKS to some incisive fast bowling from Stephan Black, coupled with a pugnacious innings from Eric Angel, defending champions Headquarters started this year’s Guyana Police Force fourth annual Inter-Division T20 competition on a successful note, when they defeated ‘B’ Division by eight wickets at the Police Sports Club ground Eve Leary, yesterday. Winning the toss and opting to field first in the game, the defending champs bowled out their opponents for 82 from 19.3 overs.
The game was played late in the afternoon because of early morning showers, which also caused the second contest between ‘A’ Division and ‘D’ Division to be pushed back to a later date,
That their opponents were dismissed cheaply was no surprise to Headquarters, as Black was getting the ball to move off the wicket with ease, troubling all of the opposition batsmen as he ended with 4 for 17.
Only Alvin George with 15 (2×4) and Rawle Scott who struck one six and a four in his 12, offered any resistance to Black, who got amicable support from Darson La Rose (3 for 16) and Mark Cumberbatch who took 2 for 17.
When Headquarters batted, they lost the wicket of Munilall Persaud, bowled by Michael Newland (2 for 15), before Angel, who opened his account by working Newland off his body for four through backward square leg, joined forces with Troy Benn to add 61 for the second wicket.
He was dropped twice in one over after hitting Newland for his first boundary, but grew in confidence to hit Andel Doris for six over backward square leg – an area he favoured as he also got two fours off Doris and another two off Ryan Joe through that same area.
He outscored his skipper during their partnership, a very unusual feat since the elder Benn is known to be a pugnacious opening batsman on his day, before a brilliant catch by Doris at short cover, gave him his marching orders back to the pavilion, but not before he had struck seven fours and one six in his 43.
His departure at 77 for 2 in the 13th over did little for ‘B’ Division’s hopes as Black joined Benn who was unbeaten on 21 when victory was achieved, and struck one four in his 6 not out to seal the win he had earlier set up with his bowling.
The action continues tomorrow at the same venue, with two more matches involving ‘C’ Division who will take on the Officers from 09:00hrs, following which ‘E’ and ‘F’ Division combined will oppose ‘G’ Division from 13:00hrs.
