COME next Saturday, the oldest cricket club in the Caribbean, the Shiv Chanderpaul Drive-based Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) will host a Double-Wicket cricket competition on their home ground from 09:30hrs, where a number of national players will be on show. According to the Club’s Secretary Jameel Baksh, eight preliminary round matches will be contested and each team must bowl consisting of three overs each during that stage of the competition all the way to the semifinals, while the final will be a four-over affair.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the Best Bowler, Fielder, Batsman and the Fielder that takes the best catch during the day’s action which will see the winners take home $100 000 a trophy and medallions, the runners-up $50 000, trophy and medallions and the two losing semifinalists pocket $25 000 each.
Entrance fee is $3 000 per team and some of the pairs who will be in action during the day are; Ramnaresh Sarwan/Leon Johnson, Robin Bacchus/Raj Nannan, Christopher Barnwell/Derwin Christian, Andre Stoll/Dennis Squires, Orin Forde/Dion Ferrier, Kellon Carmichael/Shaquille Williams and the Hetmyer brothers in Seon and Shimron Hetmyer from Universal DVD Young Warriors.
Other players who will be on show are Amir Khan, Gajanand Singh, Royston Crandon who teams up with Clinton Pestano, Elton Baker, Chien Gittens, Wasim Haslim and Sewnarine Chattergoon who joins forces with Jonathan Foo.
The Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) has given the organisers who will be supplying the balls and meals for the participating players, its blessings on this one day extra which the public is asked to support since admission to the venue is free with barbecue on sale during the day.
Meanwhile, the club has set Friday November 23 as the day when officials will be honouring their hockey and cricket players who have contributed to the club over the past year, via an Awards Ceremony and Cocktail which gets under way at 19:00hrs on the upper level of their pavilion.
