IT’S EXACTLY a week away when the masters of the track will be thundering around the South Dakota Circuit, racing for glory in the annual international motor racing meet, now one leg of the Caribbean championship. All the big names, including David Summerbell Jr of Jamaica, who carted off the Caribbean Champion Driver title several times, have indicated they will be revving their super machines next Sunday. He is leading the points tally again with 50 points, after six appearances in two legs. He will be accompanied by countrymen Peter Rae and Andre Anderson.
Already touting their presence on the Timehri track in television appearances are record-setter the ace Mark Vieira, Kevin Jeffrey, and Irfaan Mohammed who drives a 600 hp turbo Mazda RX7.
Vieira will be out in his new Mazda RX8, aiming to smash the lap record again – a feat he has achieved about three times in his career to date.
“In practice (Friday), we’ve already bettered it five times. But that’s unofficial of course,” Vieira told Chronicle Sport by telephone.
But that record, 33.56 seconds, is now held by Barbadian Roger Mayers, the defending Caribbean Champion Driver. He will be back along with countrymen Doug and Mark Maloney.
Barbados are the defending Country Champions and after two legs are second to Jamaica, 64 to 113. The Cayman Islands are third on 26 and hosts Guyana 21.
Also, representing the Golden Arrowhead will be former record-setter Andrew King, Paul Vieira and Vishok Persaud.
The battles are usually intense, too, in the local Group 4 category, headlined by speedsters Ryan Rahaman and Keith Evelyn.
This is the first year Rahaman will be facing the starters strictly in Group 4, and should up the ante, also, vying in the regional race.
“We had three appearances for the year in the group, but we experienced some engine problems in the previous meets. However, we are overcoming them and will be ready,” Rahaman told Chronicle Sport via telephone while his team worked on the turbo-charged piston-driven Forde Sierra Cosworth.
More excitement is expected in the superbike category with daredevil exploits from Stephen Vieira, Carey Griffith, Joel Neblett and Carlos Rodrigues.
Keen competition will also be on the go-kart circuit involving the two Stanley Mings, senior and junior, and youngster Nikhil Seereeram, among others.
Already one rookie has announced he will be zooming around the circuit in a higher class. Well known as WR Reaz, he will sport a Toyota EP 82 Turbo in Group 2B. While his successes on the track have been modest at best, he told another section of the media that he was confident he would perform well in the modified car.
The third and final leg of the Caribbean Race of Champions and the National Meet promise to provide anticipated thrills.
