MARLON Osborne called ‘Trini’ of Lot 1732 Achievement Place, South Ruimveldt Park, who was sprayed with bullets from a high-powered rifle, yesterday afternoon, succumbed to multiple injuries while on his way to surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Osborne, was said to be a close associate and bodyguard of the late Ricardo Rodrigues, who was gunned down execution-style about two weeks ago at GMR&SC ‘Pit Stop’ restaurant and bar at Thomas Lands.
Doctors at the Main Operating Theatre of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) yesterday failed in their bid to save the life of 33-year-old Marlon Osborne, also called ‘Trini’ who had moments earlier, come in a hail of bullets on Laluni Street, Queenstown.
Osborne, said to be a Trinidadian national, was shot around 13:35hrs, by gunmen who appeared to have been stalking him.
The victim suffered several bullet wounds to his chest and other parts of the body, but miraculously, did not die immediately. He was rushed to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the GPHC by a passing pick-up vehicle and arrived at the institution at about 13:45 hrs and succumbed at 14:55hrs, while being operated on.
As news of the shooting reached ‘Trini’s loved ones and associates, they rushed down to the hospital, desperate to get a glimpse of him, but many of them failed in their bid, since he had already been whisked away to the theatre and the doors were tightly shut.
Shocked beyond words, they spoke very little, but embraced each other and huddled together outside the Intensive Care Unit and Operating theatre; pacing the floor and appearing to be offering silent prayers for his survival. The dreadful news was subsequently broken to them and they burst into tears.
Osborne was riddled with bullets when a hooded (masked) man, who was in another car pulled up, leaned out the window and opened fire at a grey Premio PNN 9922 at about 13:30 hrs.
At the scene, yesterday, shortly after the gunfire ended more than a handful (about 39) spent shells believed to be fired from a M-70 or AK-47 rifle were scattered on the roadway.Eyewitnesses too terrified to reveal their identities told the Guyana Chronicle yesterday that PNN 9922 was about to turn out from a bridge of a residence when a car drove up, blocked its path and sprayed his car with bullets from a high-powered rifle.
Residents of Queenstown told reporters that more than a dozen bullets were fired and some of them were too scared to go outside to see what was happening, yesterday afternoon.
It was also reported that just after the shooting, two men arrived on the scene and took away a bag which was inside Osborne’s car, but they were whisked away in a police vehicle after being searched in public.
Also, a woman who arrived on the scene, and who persons said was related to Osborne, began wailing openly when she heard he was shot but was comforted by another woman.
She kept saying “Don’t tell me he is dead.”
The bullets riddled all sides of Osborne’s car even the windscreen and the concrete bridge it was slightly parked on, the area was cordoned off as curious onlookers converged to get a glimpse of the car yesterday.
Police said they are investigating the murder of Osborne.
About a week after Ricardo Rodrigues was executed, police issued a wanted bulletin for Mark De Abreu, who subsequently turned himself in with a lawyer for questioning in relation to Rodrigues’ homicide.
Ricardo Rodrigues was riddled with bullets as he sat at a table at the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club GMR&SC “Pit Stop” compound on Albert Street around 15:00 hrs on October 15.
His body bore wounds to the head, chest, hands and leg inflicted by a high-powered weapon. From all indications he died instantly.
Three other persons who were at the club at the time were injured as the gunmen sprayed bullets indiscriminately.
Those injured are Aubrey Henry, 35, of Alberttown, who was shot in both legs; Michael Hopkinson, 42, was hit on his right arm and right foot, and Canadian Jean Le Blanc was shot in his right hip, and recently succumbed.
Police say they have recovered several spent shells from the scene. Eyewitnesses recalled seeing two men dressed in black firing automatic weapons at Rodrigues.
No motive for the killing has been established as yet but investigators are probing whether it is linked to the recent arms and ammunition find at Lethem.
Rodrigues was released on $100,000 bail after spending a night in police custody pending investigations into the discovery of three M-70 and four M-16 assault rifles, along with a grenade and radio communication equipment.
