ADJOURNING Parliament to watch an American presidential debate, following a long recess, somewhat shows where some of our priorities lie. After all the debate could be taped or seen online. Again during the COI Linden hearings three opposition leaders are said to have gone to the USA seeking support for their agenda.
It is also interesting that when the government tried to move a motion to debate the Agricola situation, the Speaker, Raphael Trotman, said that it is not a matter of urgent concern. Although, legally it may be ruled this way, it certainly does not sound right to say that this event was not of urgent concern. It may not be to some in Parliament but it certainly seems so to the rest of us and should be debated as soon as possible.
What is certainly a concern to all right-thinking Guyanese is the need for one or both opposition parties to change their actions from connfrontation to cooperation and compromise. Some realists from either party should start demanding such an action. Their supporters cannot wait for the opposition to control the government one way or the other, while the parties fight among themselves to see who oppose government more.
While party leaders are waiting for power for themselves, their supporters are left waiting for the supposed changes said to have been denied them; that which would make their lives better. What really would make their lives better would be for one of the parties to see how and where they can find common ground and compromise with government in seeing that their supporters are actively represented in influencing policies that benefit them instead of simply opposing new or old government policies.
