THIS year’s Digicel Golf Classic (DGC) which is being held for the fourth successive year will tee off at 09:00hrs at the Lusignan Golf Course (LGC) today with the respective defending champions, Canada’s Roger Rajkumar and Guyana’s Christine Sukhram, set to defend their titles which they won last year.
At the launching which took place two weeks ago, secretary of the LGC, David Mohammed, said the involvement of Digicel over the last four years has resulted in the growth and further development of golf in Guyana. “I would like to say thanks to Digicel for continuously being one of our major supporters of golf, for as many of you know, golf is up and coming in Guyana and Digicel is partially responsible for that with their continuous support.
“Without their support, we would not be able to have the exposure we are having now. The Classic is one of our major tournaments for the year and Digicel usually presents the ‘Red Jacket’ to the winner of this tournament – one that players of the LGC look forward to competing in – with the turnout being high at this time of the year,” said Mohammed.
Sukhram’s opponent for her female crown, Joann Deo, said the DGC is being used by many golfers, both local and foreign, as a warm-up event for the Guyana Cup which tees off at the same venue next week.
A check with the LGC yesterday morning revealed 43 golfers, including five from overseas, have registered to compete in this year’s tournament, with more overseas participants expected to add their name to the list before the action tees off this morning.
Local golfers such as Mohammed, Alfred Mentore, Clifford Reis, Kishan Bacchus, LGC’s president Jerome Khan, Avenash Persaud, Patrick Prashad, William Walker and Munaf Arjune will do battle with Rajkumar for this year’s tournament ‘Red Jacket’, while Sukhram and Deo will have their own battle for the female title.
Chief Executive Officer of Digicel, Gregory Dean, is expected to give some brief remarks and tee-off the tournament and while it is not known whether there will be ‘Red Jackets’ issued to both the male and female winners at the end of the contest tomorrow, what is certain is a golfer will be donning the Digicel ‘Red Jacket’ that will be presented by Dean.
