REOs update President on 2012 work programme

PRESIDENT Donald Ramotar on Thursday met with Regional Executive Officers (REOs) of the ten administrative regions to have an update on the progress of their 2012 work programme. altDuring the meeting at his Office, Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, the Head of State inquired about some of the challenges and difficulties being experienced in the various regions, as it relates to developmental works.
He encouraged the officers to strive towards efficiency and effectiveness and to adhere to the necessary procurement and financial regulations, all in the interest of accountability transparency and the conduct of government.
Minister of Local Government and regional Development,  Ganga Persaud who was part of  the meeting told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that concerns were expressed by the President about findings in the auditor general’s 2011 accounts.
The minister said the President sought answers from the regional officials and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry about aspects in the report that were contentious.
He said some REOs gave explanations that are not reflected in the Auditor General’s report relating to overpayment and instances of unsatisfactory work, but also promised to be vigilant and thorough in the discharge of their duties.
Record keeping was raised as an issue that needs attention given that its absence resulted in some of the works that were completed, reflected as overpayment.
The minister described the meeting as important and timely, since the final quarter of the year would be an opportune time to assess the progress of work programmes.
