The political opposition here seems to be obsessed with the removal of Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee and the gusto with which they are pursuing it gives one the impression that somehow his removal would result in the fall of the government and they would gain power; or that the entire future of this country rests with his removal.
The latest show in the opposition’s unending circus was the ‘no confidence’ motion tabled in Parliament.
The campaign for Rohee’s removal began with the fatal Linden shootings during the so-called protests against proposed increased electricity tariffs when the opposition claimed that he had instructed the police to shoot. We all now know from the ongoing Commission of Inquiry into the shootings that the minister did not give any such instruction and, so far, he has not been guilty of any wrongdoing.
What the opposition needs to tell this nation is if anyone resigned when Father Bernard Darke, Dr Walter Rodney, Winston Dublin, Jagan Ramessar, Bhonath Parmanand, Vincent Teekah, Mrs. Lawrence Mann, Dolly Baksh, etc, were all killed.
Did anyone resign when Ms Shirley Field-Ridley died under mysterious circumstances and was unusually cremated?
Did anyone resign when the Jonestown Massacre of over 900 people occurred?
A few years ago when the British police killed an innocent Brazilian national during a terrible riot, did anyone resign or did the British opposition call for the resignation of the Home Minister?
In Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica, almost every day brutal killings and serious crimes are committed; is the political opposition in these countries calling for the removal of the Home Affairs ministers?
Satisfied that they cannot pin any linkage of Mr. Rohee to the Linden fatal shooting, the opposition has decided to shift the goal post and is now contending that he is incompetent and therefore he should be removed.
What is strange here is, the opposition has not provided any documented evidence which irrefutably shows that the minister is incompetent. All that is being done is the typical wild and sensational charge of incompetence.
But Guyanese should not shed any sweat from the opposition’s call because the call has nothing to do with Rohee’s incompetence. The call for Rohee’s removal is just being used as the ‘Trojan Horse’ to further the opposition’s three-pronged strategy.
One part of this strategy is to divert attention from the Linden Commission of Inquiry which is not yielding the results which the opposition were looking for. In fact, on the contrary, it has made the opposition look bad and for that matter the end result of the process may very well implicate leading and prominent members of the opposition for the killing of the three Lindeners.
The second part of the strategy is to pump up the pressure to test the mettle of the government and to see how strong it is. If it buckles under pressure then the pressure would be turned on until it collapses.
And the third part of the strategy is to divert attention from the weaknesses, failings and lack of proper leadership and representation of the constituencies of the opposition.
The opposition has been jumping from issue to issue like a poppy cock, sowing only confusion and chaos because it is not committed to Guyana’s development and advancement, but rather the acquisition of political power at any cost. This is not surprising, because a bunch of bitter, vindictive and power hungry politicians comprise the leadership of the opposition; they are guided by the policy whereby if you cannot get the cake to eat you destroy it.
